The Annadhanam

What happens on a serving day

Nothing complicated, and nothing improvised. The same work, in the same order, each time.

From dawn to the last plate

01

Provisions are bought

Rice, dal, vegetables, oil and spices are bought from shops in Nuzvid the day before, so the money stays in the town that the seva serves.

02

Cooking begins early

Volunteers start before sunrise. Rice and sambar go on the large vessels, a vegetable curry follows, and curd is set aside to be served last.

03

People are seated

Devotees, travellers, daily-wage workers and families sit together in rows. Leaf plates and drinking water are placed first, before anyone is asked to wait.

04

Serving, and serving again

Volunteers go down the rows twice. A meal that leaves someone still hungry has not been given properly.

Awaiting confirmed schedule

The serving days and hours will be listed here. Until they are confirmed, please call the Samithi before travelling — we would rather you reach us on a day when the vessels are on the fire.

Special occasions

On Swamy’s jayanthi, on aradhana days and during major festivals, far more people come and the annadhanam is scaled up accordingly. Sponsoring a full day of serving on one of these occasions is the single most useful thing a donor can do for us.
